Valentine’s Day Breakfast Menu

With Valentine’s Day falling on the first day of Lent this year, our family’s evening activities will involve our church’s annual Ash Wednesday service. That meant any sort of family observance was going to involve breakfast.

Today, I tested out our table setting, and I adore how it turned out. I tried to stay away from the traditional Valentine’s Day pink because my boys aren’t super big fans of the color. As it turns out, I had a vintage table cloth with blues, reds, and greens, and that formed the foundation of my table.

I discovered when I created our family’s Christmas Even tradition that my kids really enjoy sitting down to a nice table. Fancy dishes, glasses, and extra special food feels like the sweetest way to love on them. And I wanted to repeat that joy with a special meal for Valentine’s Day

As happy as I am to have the table setting figured out, I’m working on my menu for the big morning, and here’s what I have so far.

Drinks

My kids adore sparkling grape juice. We don’t usually keep it on-hand outside of Christmas and New Year’s Eve, so I think this will be a nice, bubbly treat for them to to have with their breakfast.

Of course, mom and dad will be digging hard on that coffee.

Fruit

No breakfast in our house, even on a normal day, would be complete without fruit. My little hobnail berry bowls will be perfect for that!

My boys really love berries, so I’m thinking a sweet mix of strawberries, raspberries, and blueberries will not only be really well received but will also really vainly play off the colors of the table. Now if I could pull off breakfast ambrosia? That would be something.

Hey, breakfast can be practical and beautiful!

Biscuits and Strawberry Butter

I can honestly say I’ve never made biscuits from scratch, but I had also (I’m ashamed to admit, as a Southerner), never made corn bread until last month. So I think I’m ready to tackle this. I haven’t landed on a specific recipe quite yet, so if you’ve got one you love, leave it for me in the comments. (I’m really intrigued by this recipe).

I do, however, know that this strawberry butter looks like it was made for my house. We go through an absolute ton of strawberries in our house; my boys love them. I’m hoping, as easy as this sounds, that it’s a winner and something we can use right on through strawberry season here in Florida.

Main Course

My oldest is absolutely wild about potatoes. I saw this recipe for heart potatoes and knew we needed to add this to our plan. While I don’t see us utilizing this recipe exactly (Rob cooks potatoes just how my kiddos like them), I definitely hadn’t ever thought of turning them into hearts. Genius.

I’m obsessed with the idea of combining eggs, grits, and bacon into one dish, so I’m really contemplating this dish from Southern Living. It sounds easy and super hearty.

My boys won’t go for chicken and waffles, but I’m half tempted to send them off to school and indulge in another round of breakfast with Rob featuring these guys. I’m an absolute sucker for chicken and waffles, and I have a suspicion that Chef Rob would make a killer version of this.

I’m hoping this Valentine’s Day breakfast tradition extends beyond this year. In my mind, there’s no better way to send my guys out into the world knowing how loved they are than with a special breakfast around our table.
