Three Fall Touches To Add Today

It’s officially time to start transitioning to fall, so today we’re talking about three fall touches you can add to your home today to welcome the season.

1. Candles

This seems like an obvious choice, but smell is known to scientifically connect people to a place. Even if you’re not fully committed to decorating for fall quite yet, find yourself a really great fall-inspired candle. Anything cinnamon scented drops me right into the season. Looking for a great small business candle company to support? Here are a few of my favorite:

Consider stopping by a local farmer’s market; often they have several local vendors who make wonderful candles.

If you’re in a hurry and don’t have time to seek out something local, my favorite “big box” brand of candles is Sand & Fog, which can be found at TJ Maxx or Homegoods or online at Amazon (yay, free shipping!).

Note: As an Amazon Associate, I earn from qualifying purchases.

2. Faux Florals

Bring in a few fall stems. This doesn’t have to be something overly complicated. They don’t have to be expensive or bought from the far corners of the Internet if that’s not what you desire.

In fact, I’ll bet a quick trip to the thrift would yield something you could work with!

You’ll often find faux foliage on the arts/crafts aisle. Sometimes there are whole faux arrangements that have been donated. You could always buy one to dismantle and reuse the foliage in an updated container.

If you live in an area that experiences an actual change in the seasons and you can forage stems on your own property, even better!

I happened to buy my stems at Hobby Lobby simply because I caught a great discount (40% off), but you can also find some really great options at your nearest store with an arts and crafts aisle.

I like to work in threes when I design. I’m not a floral arranger by any means, but I think I’ve really upped my bouquet arranging in recent years. My goal is to find the sweet balance of contrast and coordination. I like to find leaf shapes that contrast each other (creates visual interest) while finding stems that share similar colors to tie everything together. This afternoon over on Instagram, I’ll be chatting about how I put together my arrangement on my kitchen table. If you’re reading this afterward, you can find the highlight on my profile called “Fall Florals.”

A single stem can also work great in a small vase. Or even some dried floral stems in a basket. Use your imagination!

While I love fall colors, don’t forget to find stems with some remaining greenery. If you ask me, green is definitely a fall color.

3. Linens

There’s no better way set the look (and feel!) of autumn than with some appropriately-selected linens.

For most, fall signifies dropping evening temperatures, and your linens should reflect the differing needs of the season. Look for chunkier fibers than you might have used in the summer.

I love tightly woven crochets (the thrift has so many donated crochet blankets). I’m a big fan of vintage wool blankets, but my family is much happier snuggling up with a softer wool blend.

I try to stick to earthy tones: browns, creams, greens of fading leaves, oranges of a more burnt rust variety, mustards.

I love my linen pillow covers (confession: I have these in several colors because they are just so soft … and I adore the fringe). Last year, I also bought a fun round pillow to invoke the feel of pumpkins, and it was the pillow my kids fought over using.

Bonus: Clear Things Out

When in doubt, clear off your surfaces and shelves. Fall is the season where nature is dying back for the season, and our homes can reflect the season with a pared down approach to decorating.

This is not really my expertise; I’m very much a “more is more” mentality. However, I love taking cues from nature. And when I’m uninspired to decorate for fall, I find clearing the area inspires me to intentionally fill it back in a way that isn’t visually overwhelming. Like a few majestic leaves remaining on an oak tree.

Overwhelmed about where to start adding fall touches? Just pick one tip above and start there. Maybe today you find the perfect cozy throw to add to your living room. Maybe later this week, you hunt for just the right fall scents to fill your home. Decorate (or don’t!) on your own time frame.

Which of these are you going to try today?
