The Hunt for a Bar Cabinet
Have you ever been on the hunt for the “perfect” piece of furniture? You haven’t seen anything like it quite yet, but you’re convinced you’ll know it’s right once you lay eyes on it? So it was when I set out to find a new piece of furniture to function as a “bar cabinet.”
We aren’t huge drinkers, but we have enough of a collection of alcoholic goodies that we’ve purchased to try different recipes that we outgrew our former storage situation.
The rickety, repurposed tea cart, while charming, just had me constantly worried it would take off rolling across the house with all manner of glassware held hostage for the journey.
The area I needed the cabinet to fit is unique. The rolling barn door that closes off our bedroom hallway at night rests behind the wall the cabinet fits, so I needed it to be a certain size so that the door would be able to be centered behind it along the wall. It needed to have lots of shelf space, and I wanted it to have doors to hide the storage.
Months of scouring the corners of Facebook Marketplace unearthed an antique jelly cabinet that seemed, according to measurements, to fit perfectly.
Even better, the piece had a story. The seller had recently moved from up north and said the cabinet had been in her family’s farmhouse for generations.
I love everything about it, from the primitive locking mechanism to the square nails. It fits perfectly into our evolving library, and I’ve enjoyed styling it throughout the holidays.
Sometimes I just need a hard-fought antique score to be reminded that patience pays off in the hunt for the perfect pieces of furniture.
