Quieting Home Discontent: Part 2

Two weeks ago, I shared with you all about how I’m fighting back against home discontent. In this season of trying to save money, I’m focusing on low- to no-cost ways to love the home I already have. Today, I wanted to share Part 2 of my series. These have been my go-to summer strategies as I’ve faced long days at home.

Sewing in my studio
  1. “Putter” — I’ve been reading Simple Abundance by Sarah Ban Breathnach since January. She advocates “puttering,” or spending time in your home moving things around, digging in closets for items you forgot you had, etc. The key is to use what you have in a new way to create a new space. Switch out pillows from room to room, move some of those pictures and other nick-nacks to a new location. Surprise yourself with how you can freshen a little corner with what you already have.
  2. Find a hobby — I’ve always crafted, and lately, I’ve thrown myself into sewing. I’ve always loved the idea of taking fabric, new or old, and transforming it into something beautiful and/or functional. I’m not very good, but that’s ok. I’m enjoying the process of trying something new. My current project? Sewing curtains for Truvie. (picture sewing)
  3. Hit a thrift store — I’ve been on the hunt for interesting houseplant planters and items to finish off my library. Set a tight spending limit (mine is usually $10) and see what treasures you can find and repurpose. Be creative! (picture of thrifting stash)
  4. Work in the yard — Have 30 minutes? Take out the weed eater and trim up a walkway. Problems with kudzu vine (ugh, they’re so awful here)? Grab a pair of gloves and start pulling them off. Trim, cut, and edge until your heart is content. If your budget allows, visit a local nursery and grab a few plants. One of my quarantine projects was cleaning up my container garden. For a small cost, I was able to make the area I stare at from my front window look fresh. There’s nothing I love more than drinking my coffee while watching for butterflies visiting my blooms. I hope these tips will give you a perspective shift when you most need it. Currently, I’m staring down a messy sunroom and kitchen that’s causing me a little grief. After I’m finished here, I plan to grab my vacuum, throw on some fun music, and clean my way to contentment.

Cheers from the cottage,
