New Life for Vintage Rattan Dining Chairs

One of the things my mom always told me as a little girl was to marry a man who is handy. She didn’t mention anything about an upholsterer, but boy has marrying one of those sure come in clutch.

Quite a few years ago now, my husband brought home a rattan dining room set with teal-upholstered chairs. And I hated the set. Like, really hated it. But I felt a little guilty for essentially running the design show around here, so we kept the set.

The funny thing is, as time passed, the chairs grew on me.

Children’s wear-and-tear on the original fabric and a dark green kitchen cabinet paint job necessitated a change. And they desperately needed some additional padding in the seat area.

Right before we hosted Thanksgiving, my husband reupholstered the chairs, and I’m so happy with how they turned out. They still have the vintage appeal with the extra cushioning and fabric to make them both practical and comfortable. I also love that the neutral fabric will allow us to change its surroundings for years to come without any clash.

My upholsterer husband made it look so easy. I’m endlessly thankful for his many talents that allow us to continue to make this cottage a home.
