Kitchen Renovation: An Update
Four years ago, we started the very slow process of renovating our kitchen. At the time, we painted our wooden cabinets white and removed the doors off the upper cabinets. We didn’t think it was wise to do anything else until we had our plumbing updated, which didn’t happen for almost another two years.
A baby and then a worldwide pandemic halted any further kitchen renovations. By the time we were ready to move forward in December, I had decided that we were also not white kitchen cabinet people. They were just too hard to keep clean.
But 2021 was the year we picked back up the kitchen renovation torch. While some of our plans have changed, one thing hadn’t: our desire to ditch our retro 1950s Formica countertops.
Over the span of a few weekends in December, my husband installed butcher block countertops while I painted our lower cabinets green. We also added a beautiful single apron front sink and a matte black faucet.
We chose acacia butcher block from Lowe’s because we thought the varying wood tones and grains would bring warmth and visual interest to the space. I also thought they would look incredible against green cabinets. And I think I was right!
This week, we’re working on finishing up this project. When my husband outfitted our new farm sink, he had to cut out a new piece for face of the cabinet, so that needs paint. He also cut a few pieces of trim to finish off some cabinet edges that also need some paint. I’m also changing out the hardware on the cabinets.
