Garden Build, Part 2: Garden Gates
It’s possible that I was lured into gardening simply because of pictures of pretty garden gates.
You’ve probably seen a few floating around the Internet yourself. Lush arches covered in climbing roses. Creaky, rusty iron gates. Handmade signs announcing one’s arrival into a “secret garden” of sorts.
Ok, so maybe I’m not gardening solely for a picturesque garden gate. But, having a beautiful entrance into my garden, which is unconventionally situated in my front yard, topped my priority list.
The way we situated our garden, I left openings for two gates. One opens onto the pathway leading to the back yard. The main gate opens onto the walkway leading to our front door.
In all of my dreaming, though unclear on specifics, I knew that I wanted my garden to take on a more rustic character. Nothing too perfect or “neat.”
As I thought about repurposing something already on-hand, I remembered an old broken door that my husband found on the side of the road last spring.
Given the gap between beds, my original plan was to install it at the smaller entrance. Thankfully, my husband talked me out of that and encouraged me to feature it at the main garden entrance.
The door, once cut down, was clearly meant to function as the main attraction.
The day before we started making gate decisions, my husband and I found an old picket fence panel on the side of the road (are you sensing a trend?). We removed the pickets, trimmed them down, and attached them to sturdier pieces of wood before hanging as the second gate.
This gate sits lower and allows us to gaze over our garden from our front porch unobstructred.
Our little roadside treasures give the garden the perfect rustic look. I can’t wait to use two pieces of old salvaged wood to create the cutest little handmade signs to adorn them.

Tomorrow, I’ll be sharing about our garden security (read: anti-yellow labrador) measures. Be sure to stop back by!
