Quieting Home Discontent: Part 1

ByColleen Philpot June 17, 2020April 27, 2023

I have a deeply confusing love/hate relationship with my cottage. I love this old place: the tongue-and-groove woodwork, the creaky floors, the lake views. But no matter how much progress we make here, I am prone to seasons of discontent.  For me, discontent tends to creep up when I’m discouraged about our lack of pace…

Losing Maggie: My Goodbye Letter

ByColleen Philpot February 4, 2020April 27, 2023

This morning, my husband and I wrapped up our 13-year-old labrador retriever in a cozy blanket, loaded her into the truck for one final truck ride to the vet’s office, and gently stroked her head as she took her final breaths. In the past 48 hours, it had become painfully obvious that our Maggie Mae…

Southern Azalea Book Club: Big Dreams, Daily Joys

ByColleen Philpot January 16, 2020January 16, 2020

As an English literature teacher, I get the opportunity to indulge in all sorts of incredible books. I’ve always been a voracious reader. I emotionally connect with books and words in a way that other forms of media simply can’t touch. I decided that I’m going to take time on the blog in this upcoming…

In Praise of Old Florida

ByColleen Philpot June 27, 2019June 27, 2019

In the morning, my son and I try to spot Dwight and Dorothy, a pair of donkeys that live in a field near my parents’ house. In fact, we have no idea if their names are actually Dwight and Dorothy. These are just names we gave to the duo one day this past winter when…

The Perfect Peach Project

ByColleen Philpot June 24, 2019April 27, 2023

A few weeks back, I started getting notifications on Facebook about The Peach Truck Tour rolling through town. If you’re as unfamiliar as I was with The Peach Truck, it tours around the Southeast selling fresh Georgia peaches in 25-pound boxes. I had never handled that volume of fruit before, but I had been dying…

New Name. Same Space.

ByColleen Philpot June 10, 2019June 17, 2019

When you were growing up, did you ever want a new name? I spent my childhood listening others butcher the pronunciation of and/or the spelling of my name. I’d be lying if I didn’t admit there were times that I had wished that I had some shorter, simpler name. While I grew to really embrace…

Our sweet community showed up for Small Business S Our sweet community showed up for Small Business Saturday, and we honestly couldn’t be more thankful for your support of this little dream we have of helping others create a home they never want to leave. We love hearing that our story, our passion for home, and our little shop resonate with you all!

While we also continue to have so many fun Christmas treasures to make this the coziest month of the year, we also have so many incredible pieces to give as gifts. Over the next few weeks, we’ll be sharing many thoughtful, intentional gift-giving ideas that include heirloom pieces made to last.

I tell everyone who asks that our brick and mortar I tell everyone who asks that our brick and mortar shop is the result of ten years of dreaming. But really, it’s the result of a husband who loves his wife crazy big. He had listened to her share her vision for a sweet space where lovers of home could find thoughtfully curated pieces to cozy up their corners of the world. A destination for folks to be inspired to create warm, “homey” spaces. A retreat from the frenzied pace and concerns of a modern world. A reflection of our own little cottage that we had shared online for the last few years.

When the time came to take a leap and actually do the thing that had been dreamed and talked over nearly to death, he mustered courage enough for both to turn that dream into the sweetest reality.

Maybe you see a little of yourselves in one of us. A timid dreamer. A courageous encourager. Creative. Homebody.

Because ultimately, we’re regular folks, just like you. And like so many others who have thrown open the doors to small shops, bakeries, and cafes in communities all across the country.

This holiday season, small business owners will try to find ways to compete with big box stores. While you may save a few pennies by purchasing mass-produced, questionably-made items, when you support small businesses, you’re choosing to value curated experiences, personal touches, and the dream of regular folks looking to bring beauty into the very communities they call home.

As you make your shopping lists and check them twice, we hope that you’ll make The Southern Azalea your first stop on your hunt for one-of-a-kind gifts for all of the regular folks in your life.

We’re so deeply thankful for every like, every share, every message, every purchase, and every kind word on this shop journey. But most of all, we’re thankful for you.

If you’re local to Inverness, Florida, we hope to see you at our Small Business Saturday sale tomorrow!
