A Look Back at April

ByColleen Philpot May 4, 2023May 4, 2023

April absolutely flew by. My head sort of feels like it’s spinning when I stop and really think about it all. We announced our entry into the One Room Challenge with our forthcoming porch build and have shared its progress weekly since then. For most of the month, we’ve shared the “messy middle” of this…

Planting our Spring Garden

ByColleen Philpot April 26, 2023April 27, 2023

Yesterday, we finally got around to fully planting our spring garden. Talk about an absolute dream come true. This garden has been a stirring in my heart for years. My previous attempt at a garden was sort of an epic fail. Actually, as my dear friend said to me, there are no failures in the…

Fresh Water for the Garden

ByColleen Philpot April 21, 2023April 21, 2023

Salt may go good with any number of fresh roasted vegetables. But salt water is a definite no-go. This week, our big project was to bring fresh, untreated water up from our well and to our garden. I’ve got my husband pretty busy with our One Room Challenge project. I knew he was plenty capable…

Filling the Garden Beds

ByColleen Philpot April 19, 2023April 21, 2023

My body may ache until my next birthday, and the blister on my right hand may never heal. But our garden beds are filled and ready for plants! One of the reasons I didn’t pursue my garden sooner was the fear that filling raised beds was going to be very expensive. And if you’re using…

2023 Spring Garden Plan

ByColleen Philpot April 17, 2023April 21, 2023

It’s been about a month and a half since we built our dream garden. This week, we’re finally planting it out! Today, I wanted to share my garden plan. First, please know that in this season of gardening, I am learning. I will make a ton of naive, and probably wrong, choices. For most of…

Sheet Mulching: Six Month Check-in

ByColleen Philpot March 13, 2023March 13, 2023

Last fall, I turned the strip of yard abutting my reclaimed brick walkway into a gorgeous flower bed for my azaleas using the sheet mulching technique. Sheet mulching involves using cardboard to carve out previously grassy lawn space for a new flower bed. Simply, a gardener plants some new plants and then lays down cardboard…

Our sweet community showed up for Small Business S Our sweet community showed up for Small Business Saturday, and we honestly couldn’t be more thankful for your support of this little dream we have of helping others create a home they never want to leave. We love hearing that our story, our passion for home, and our little shop resonate with you all!

While we also continue to have so many fun Christmas treasures to make this the coziest month of the year, we also have so many incredible pieces to give as gifts. Over the next few weeks, we’ll be sharing many thoughtful, intentional gift-giving ideas that include heirloom pieces made to last.

I tell everyone who asks that our brick and mortar I tell everyone who asks that our brick and mortar shop is the result of ten years of dreaming. But really, it’s the result of a husband who loves his wife crazy big. He had listened to her share her vision for a sweet space where lovers of home could find thoughtfully curated pieces to cozy up their corners of the world. A destination for folks to be inspired to create warm, “homey” spaces. A retreat from the frenzied pace and concerns of a modern world. A reflection of our own little cottage that we had shared online for the last few years.

When the time came to take a leap and actually do the thing that had been dreamed and talked over nearly to death, he mustered courage enough for both to turn that dream into the sweetest reality.

Maybe you see a little of yourselves in one of us. A timid dreamer. A courageous encourager. Creative. Homebody.

Because ultimately, we’re regular folks, just like you. And like so many others who have thrown open the doors to small shops, bakeries, and cafes in communities all across the country.

This holiday season, small business owners will try to find ways to compete with big box stores. While you may save a few pennies by purchasing mass-produced, questionably-made items, when you support small businesses, you’re choosing to value curated experiences, personal touches, and the dream of regular folks looking to bring beauty into the very communities they call home.

As you make your shopping lists and check them twice, we hope that you’ll make The Southern Azalea your first stop on your hunt for one-of-a-kind gifts for all of the regular folks in your life.

We’re so deeply thankful for every like, every share, every message, every purchase, and every kind word on this shop journey. But most of all, we’re thankful for you.

If you’re local to Inverness, Florida, we hope to see you at our Small Business Saturday sale tomorrow!
