Bookcase Makeover: The Plan

In the new year, I decided to try my hand at another furniture makeover. We found this vintage bookcase at a local thrift store for a really great price. It’s solid wood, but a few changes are going to give this piece a spectacular new look.

Right off the bat, I wasn’t super thrilled with the wood tone of this piece. The other pieces of furniture the piece will be joining have more of that traditional honey midcentury tone, so leaving it as-is just wasn’t an option.

The plan is to give it a fresh coat of paint using Melange Paint in Vagabond Blue. The back will be covered in a sweet blue wallpaper with the most incredible green, mustard, and cream. The interior glass shelves inside will be upgraded to wooden shelves. I’m still trying to work out if those will be solid wood, or if I’ll wrap them in wallpaper.

From there, we plan to cut off the bulky bottom below the bottom doors and add some neat mid-century-inspired legs to the bottom of the cabinet.

The hardware on the vintage bookcase is one of the neatest parts; I think they’re brass and just need a little cleaning up to shine again.

I’ll take you along behind the scenes this week on social media (check out my stories) to keep you updated on the progress. My goal is to have this piece finished by the weekend. Stay tuned!
