A Poem of Thanks

My grandfather wrote poetry. He wasn’t famous for it, and I don’t think he ever got published, save the collection of his original poems he gifted to his children before he passed away.

Whether his love of words inspired mine, or if I was just naturally born with a love of communicating through writing, I decided to try my hand at poetry a few months back. Below is a poem I wrote expressing gratitude for this incredible life I’m privileged to lead. I hope it blesses you on this Thanksgiving Day and inspires you to put your own feelings of thanks into words.

For ancient oaks that grade the lake’s edge, / This cozy old cottage, the imperfection it displays; / For the warmth that envelops all of its people, / My creator I endlessly praise.

For laughter and an adventure-filled life, / His abundance of patience and a long, loving gaze; / For this man who so wholly and joyfully serves me, / My Creator I endlessly praise.

For Cuyler, artistic, intelligent, sensitive, perceptive, / And Sawyer, bold brazen, energy to amaze; / For these miraculous boys, the sweetest gifts, / My Creator I endlessly praise.

For a sunrise, a bold, creamy coffee, / Quiet moments to start all days; / For a flickering candle, the soft glow of a lamp, / My Creator I endlessly praise.

For dinners gathered around our farm table, / Moments shared with my people, in a variety of ways; / For this life so mercifully bestowed upon me, / My Creator I endlessly praise.

Cheers from the cottage,

Colleen
