A Modern Advent Wreath

Modern Advent Wreath

Christmas is my favorite time of year as I’m sure it is for so many. I’ve often been guilty of rushing through the season, of getting to Christmas Day and realizing I’ve been too “busy” to really focus much on the “meditations of my heart” and shepherd my oldest son’s heart in the process.

This year, I wanted to be very intentional about preparing our family’s hearts for Christmas and decided to put my own modern, creative spin on the Advent wreath to mark each Advent Sunday with my family.

My original plan had been to stay pretty true to the original Advent wreath design and use monochromatic pillar candles. Because I couldn’t find five pillar candles in the same color, I decided to grab these cute tree candles and the church candle from TJMaxx and supplement them with two red pillar candles from Walmart. I always grab fresh greenery from Lowe’s tree discards area to display in various areas of my home, and they round out the wreath perfectly.

I’ve been reading Bobby Gross’s Living the Christian Year, which so beautifully lays out the Christian liturgical calendar and gives Scripture and prayer each week of the year. We’ll use that as the basis for our family’s Advent focus for the week as we light each new candle on Sunday night.

I’m excited to bring this rich historical tradition into our home this Advent season. Does your family do anything special to commemorate Advent? I’d love to hear about it in the comments.

Cheers from the cottage,

Colleen
