A Look Back at April
April absolutely flew by. My head sort of feels like it’s spinning when I stop and really think about it all.
We announced our entry into the One Room Challenge with our forthcoming porch build and have shared its progress weekly since then. For most of the month, we’ve shared the “messy middle” of this project; troubleshooting, technical issues, paint decisions, and dreams for the space. We brought you along as we finally got our dream garden fully planted and built a fresh water line to keep our salt-treated water from harming our tender garden plants. We also took you inside our first “finished” space of the cottage: Our library. This space was born of a childhood dream and began while pregnant with my youngest. Three years of work on this space has us feeling all kinds of proud.
Rob finished rebuilding the dock that collapsed almost two years ago. It’s not our forever dock, so he didn’t take great care to do anything extra special. The goal was simply to make it sturdy and presentable once again so that we can spend the summer boating on our lake.
Four yards of topsoil and compost made a temporary home in front of our garden as I worked to shovel it all into our beds. I’m thankful this is the only time I’ll have to move that much dirt around our property.
We’ve been taking beekeeping classes from our local UF IFAS extension since the beginning of March. It has been so neat to discover more about the bee world and figure out if we are ready to bring bees onto our property. Our friends let us join them for a hive inspection this month, which was such a blast. I’ll probably be telling everyone for the rest of my days how I spotted the queen bee in our second hive.
We got a jump on summer and went blueberry and blackberry picking at a local farm. I’m looking forward to going back for more in a few weeks so that I can make blueberry preserves, cobblers, and ice cream.
Finally, I spent the last weekend of April scrubbing this little cottage. All of our outdoor projects had left the inside feeling a little more than neglected. I washed windows, curtains, area rugs, and appliances. My goal is to maintain this level of clean through the next month, filled with so much end-of-the-school-year busy.
What are you excited to read more about this month on the blog? I’d love to read your thoughts below!
